Where does “Viva La….” Come from?
Ex) Viva la Vida (Coldplay)
Viva la Juicy (Juicy Couture)
Viva la Bam (reality television)
There are a couple of names that start with “Viva la”
What is that supposed to mean and where did it come from?
It is the Spanish equivalent of “Long live….” It comes from the verb “Vivir” which means “to live” in Spanish. It is conjugated in the third person imperative form (which is the form used to give commands)
¡Viva la libertad! = Long live liberty! (Note: the word “long” is just what we say in English, the Spanish word for long is not actually present in the expression).
