When I wear a gold plated necklace, after a few days I get itchy and small bumps? This just started recently?
I had a necklace that was a fingerprint of my late uncle. After a few weeks, the gold plating started wearing off of the pendant, and you could see the silver underneath. I was able to send it back to get redone. She said that it is real silver under the gold, btw. Now I have a Juicy Couture bff necklace that I just got and my neck is starting to itch again. It is also gold plated. I have real silver earrings that I got from Tiffany & Co. and they make my ears infected after just a few hours of having them in. All silver earrings bother my ears. They never did until the past year. Am I allergic to silver?
you are most certainly not allergic to the silver but the other metals that it is alloyed with. Sterling silver only has 92.5 % fine silver, the rest is made up of copper and other metals. Same with the gold plated jewelry, you are allergic to one of the other metals. Mostly people are allergic to nickel. What I would try next is wear some non-allergenic jewelry or try higher quality gold jewelry, 18K or so.
If you are allergic to something but keep having contact with it, the allergy will get more severe. Also, you can develop an allergy at any age.
Cheers
