Dressing to Look & Feel Good
Here’s the big confession…I’m a converted handbag lover! That was not the case some 10 years ago. I was your run of the mill standard black or brown plynal (plastic/vinyl) handbag toter; I thought it was jazzy if it had a bit of gold hardware on it. I got every bit of the $60.00 dollars I invested in it for all of the 6 months I used it for. I wore my bags for function not for form or beauty, especially when my kids were younger. Today much has changed; I absolutely love beautiful handbags. Which is probably one of the reasons I am so passionate about creating them. I don’t see handbags as a part of my identity but I do feel that they enhance a women’s overall packaging. It’s a fact that when we look good, more often than not we feel good too. And who says we can’t have a beautiful functional bag?
Quite often we hear the old adage, “don’t judge a book by it’s cover”, but the truth be told, first impressions are indeed lasting. How are you viewed by your family, friends, colleagues; can they take you seriously when you dress like a candidate for ‘Fashion Disasters Anonymous’? Don’t get me wrong, I’m not advocating draining your account to appease the public, I am merely suggesting that if we are to be taken seriously in whichever field we represent, we ought to consider our attire.
Dressing nicely does not mean expensive designer labels, it simply means being tastefully and appropriately attired for the occasion. In fact many of the couture designers are now offering ready to wear labels that are affordable for most budgets. So the days of wearing the stained, shrunk and torn garments just because you’re only going to the grocery store should be a thing of the past…even for the housewives. A great pair of jeans, a correctly sized blouse, a dab of lipstick and a Teri Monique handbag is a great casual combination any day of the week and yet you look like a million dollars.
So what does this all have to do with handbags? Gosh, I thought you’d never ask. Your accessories are like the icing on the cake. How you choose to accessorize your outfit will be the deciding factor if you feel like a “wow” or should just “change now”. As a matter of course, many fashion experts agree that the accessories should be your first purchase, then you look for the outfit. However, since that is not usually the case we will work with Plan B. Complement your garment with the handbag and shoes that best pull your outfit together. If you are wearing a printed garment, choose a handbag that does not conflict with your print. Many prints can go together, but look for a smooth flow of color, texture and pattern. This does not always mean that your bag and footwear is the main attraction but it should give the appearance of, “oh my, that lady is well put together”. We should not limit our opportunities by under dressing or overdressing. There is appropriate attire for every occasion.

Where do you start? Here are a few great tips for purchasing handbags….
- Invest in a quality handbag you truly love. One that has a style that will last for years and not just for a season.
- Choose a style and size that complements your body type. For example, if you are petite and somewhat short, a large bag is not the best match for you. Try a small to medium handbag. That way you take charge…you’re wearing the bag; it’s not wearing you. On the other hand, if you are tall and full figured, you would not want to carry a petite handbag. A larger bag would be a better scale to enhance your gorgeous look. Remember large doesn’t mean bulky; complement your figure, don’t compete with it. The rounder the figure the more structured the handbag should be.
- Think of colors. Gone are the days of just a black or a brown handbag. Invest in a handbag that allows flexibility and creativity with your wardrobe. Matching is blasé; think coordination, think “wow!” For example, your orange and gold handbag doesn’t have to sit on the shelf for the next time you wear your orange outfit. Team it up with shades of blue and beige and dare I say it . . . pink!
