For inspiration and ideas look at good fashion magazines for example any of the Vogue magazines (Teen Vogue, Italian Vogue, etc.) and at style books- many fashion stylists, fashion designers, and style icons have them, and there are ones for teens like Lauren Conrad wrote “Style”. They can give you inspiration, help you determine your style, and teach you some of the basics. Study the styles of celebrities whose fashion sense you love and make collages or “inspiration boards” out of random things you like. For example, yours could include fabric swatches you like, buttons and ribbons, pictures of models and clothing items you like, quotes, and sketches. When you’re in a rut, look at your board for help. See if there’s a fashion design or model drawing elective at your school, many high schools offer them especially in junior and senior years. There’s a great website, www.boutiques.com, that lets you create your own “boutique” online where you can pick what you love/hate, follow your friends and favorite style icons, and help you learn more about fashion. Its free and fun. You can start a style blog for free on many websites or make youtube ideas on your fashion, like do “outfits of the Day” and hauls. Also, just practice sketching and designing to hone your talents. Don’t worry about what “style” or the name of your future line, because its easier to get ideas when you’re not obsessing about it, and you have lots of time. If this is still your passion when it’s time for college applications, apply to colleges where you can study design and fashion, or go to a college especially for design like FIT or Parson’s. See if you can intern somewhere or get a job at a clothing store you like the style of. For now, just set small goals, work for them, and remember, hard work pays off! Good luck!
